LA POSTA VECCHIA HOTEL is a historical villa close to Rome built by Prince Orsini in 1640 on top of the remains of an ancient Roman city called Alsium. The Prince needed a wide place for friends to stay when visiting but the villa quickly became an important place to rest also for those travellers who, making their way by horse along the Aurelia road into the city, needed a place where to rest, eat and sleep.
In 1693, the Orsini family sold their properties, the Castle with La Posta Vecchia to Livio Odescalchi, another important member of aristocratic Italian family; the villa became during these years a very important and well-know place which maintained its function as a traveller’s lodge until 1918 when it was partially destroyed by a fire in.
In 1960 LA POSTA VECCHIA was bought by an important businessman, the American Jean Paul Getty that, alongside art historian Federico Zeri, restored it to its original splendour, adding unique furniture from the XV and XVII centuries, objects and precious artwork acquired from royal homes from around the world. During the restoration, the ruins of a large Roman villa were uncovered which now form the core of the small archaeological museum in the hotel’s basement.
The villa’s recent history began in the 1980s when the Getty’s private home was purchased by the Italian Sciò family, owner of the worldwide famous hotel Il Pellicano. Roberto Sciò used the villa as their private residence until 1990, the year when the owner decided to return it to its original function of hospitality, and since then LA POSTA VECCHIA has operated as an elegant and refined five-star luxury hotel.
